A sonic boom has been felt over Essex with residents reporting what sounded like a loud 'explosion'. Residents have taken to social media to report the 'ground and houses' shaking after the incident this afternoon (Tuesday, January 12). The boom was heard from Cambridgeshire to Essex. A fighter jet travelling over 1000 mph in the skies over Cambridge, Hertfordshire and Essex is the cause of the sonic boom. An RAF Typhoon was sent to escort a plane that had lost communication with air traffic controllers into Stansted Airport.
