Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson have become honor citizens of Greece. What's going on? Greece Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis posted a photo to Instagram that shows Wilson and Hanks with official new passports from Greece. "@ritawilson @tomhanks are now proud Greek citizens!" Hanks tweeted back in January that he and Wilson had become honorary Greek citizens. Per CNN, this happened back in 2019 after officials praised Hanks for "helping raise awareness about the 2018 fires that devastated areas near Athens and claimed the lives of more than 100 people." According to USA Today, Greek law allows people to receive naturalization if they have "provided exceptional services to the country or whose naturalization serves the public interest." "Tom Hanks is a person who showed real interest in the people who suffered from the fire in Mati and promoted this issue in the global media," Greek Interior Minister Takis Theodorikakos told CNN in a statement in December 2019.
According to CNN, Hanks is a Greek Orthodox convert and Wilson is part Greek. The two often vacation in the country and they own property on Antiparos, an island off the coast of the country.
