Witnesses have reported a 'big explosion' in the building - which is just yards away from the port. East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service said 12 fire engines were at the scene in Beach Road. Firefighters are tackling a huge blaze tearing through an industrial building in Newhaven Onlooker Thea Pitcher - who shared footage of the smoke - said: 'There was a big explosion near the Port in Newhaven ten minutes ago.' Local councillor Sean Macleod said: 'Newhaven fire is massive and the air isn't very nice so be careful.' An East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: 'We have 12 fire engines at the incident in Newhaven. The fire is affecting an industrial building. Please avoid the area.' They then added: 'Please avoid the area and keep doors and windows closed if you in Newhaven.
One person, who could see the smoke from near Hove Lawns, said: "The smoke cloud is absolutely massive. "I don't know what is going on but it looks like an explosion." The fire still rages on but so far seems unstoppable. Police and emergency services are on scene and waiting for the fire to extinguished so they begin forensic tests. More than 80 calls to the fire service following the apparent blast this morning. At 9.30am fire and rescue crews were called attend the incident in Newhaven. Officials say an industrial building was found alight and has since been evacuated. Although no one in the surrounding area has had to evacuate their homes people are being warned to keep their windows and doors shut as fire is dealth with. A witness who shared footage from the scene tweeted: "There was a big explosion near the Port in Newhaven 10 minutes ago." A statement by the East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service says: "East Sussex Fire and Rescue were called at 09.32 today 8 August 2020 to reports of a fire in Newhaven. "An industrial building at Beach Road is alight. More than 80 999 calls have been made to us. "If you live in the area and avoid if you're planning on visiting. We know the weather's hot, but the smoke is very unpleasant and may affect you." East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service confirmed firefighters were called to the blaze in Beach Road just after 9.30am.
