The fire at the Twinwoods Business Park in Milton Ernest engulfed the four-storey building, sending thick, black smoke across the Bedfordshire sky. Matthew Smith, who was evacuated from his work close by, said: "We literally ran out the area as quickly as we could, because it looked very dangerous." Roads have been closed in the area. "There was smoke - black, thick - and then we could hear a few explosions, as someone said there are gas canisters in the building." Bedfordshire Fire said: "All people have been accounted for" and confirmed the fire had reached the fourth floor and 80% of the building was "engulfed".

The business park backs on to the Yarl's Wood Immigration Removal Centre. Bedfordshire Police said Thurleigh Road and Bletsoe Road are closed. "Lots of explosions" and a huge fire have broken out at a business park near Bedford. Massive plumes of black smoke can be seen filling the sky from the area of the Twinwoods Business Park, Milton Ernest, near Bedford city centre. Bedfordshire Fire and Rescue said they have eight fire engines in attendance and advised the public to stay clear of the area.

An eyewitness to the scene reported there were "lots of explosions and plumes of black smoke." Twinwoods Business Park is a former military research facility that housed a collection of wind tunnels used for military aerodynamics research. Some of these wind tunnels are now being used commercially, while other buildings on the site offer office, industrial and warehouse accommodation. It happened at the Twinwoods Business Park, Milton Ernest which is very close to the city centre at around 1pm, (Friday, November 1). Large and thick plumes of black smoke can be seen for around 12 miles away as the fire rages on, according to witnesses. Around eight fire engines from Bedfordsdhire Fire and Rescue are at the scene currently, trying to fight the fire and have advised the public to stay well clear of the area. The business park was previously a military research facility but now acts as industrial and warehouse accomodation. It is also home to an adventure centre. Follow our live blog below for updates:
