The 58-year-old stand-up comedian and actress was a guest on Sky Arts' show Portrait Artist of the Year in which art hopefuls had four hours to create a portrait of the star. Viewers were impressed to see Eddie addressed as 'she' and 'her' by the contestants – with many praising the star for being a "trailblazer" of the LGBT community. While the show aired on Sky Arts on Thursday, it wasn't until the weekend that many noted how Eddie had been addressed, with fans backing her online. (Image: Sky Arts) One fan took to Twitter to write: "Just watched Portrait Artist of the Year with Eddie Izzard...first public outing as she/her (gender fluid) how refreshing." And another gushed: "Just discovered Eddie Izzard now uses she/her pronouns love you Eddie, thanks for being a trail blazer." Others took to defending Eddie after some social media users lashed out to abuse the star.
One fan wrote in defence: "I'm seeing a lot of cruelty directed at Eddie Izzard for asking politely for people to use she/her pronouns. "Eddie has been trans since the mid 80s. Eddie has been happy with she/her pronouns for years. "She's just now asking for people to drop the he/him pronouns she used to use." For decades Eddie was known for being a transvestite, appearing on stage and television while dressed in women's clothing – to which he would note: "They're not women's clothes. They're my clothes. I bought them." When previously asked about what preferred pronouns she would prefer, Eddie has been quoted stating: "I am going with either 'he' or 'she.' "Either way is fine. If I am in boy mode then 'he' or girl mode 'she.' People get confused, but thank you for asking." Eddie previously opened up in 2017 about coming out as transgender telling the Hollywood reporter: "I am essentially transgender. I have boy mode and girl mode. I do feel I have boy genetics and girl genetics."
