According to French outlet L'Equipe, the Bluebirds are keeping a close eye on the 23-year-old, who is believed to be growing increasingly frustrated at the lack of first-team opportunities in Brittany, and recently confirmed his desire to move on in this window. He said: "I want to leave this winter. "What interests me is to play and enjoy myself on the pitch. I miss that." However, despite those comments, a permanent move has not been ruled out, with Cardiff set to face competition from Utrecht and French side Angers for his signature.
Doumbia only arrived at Rennes back in January 2019, joining from Swiss side Grasshopper Zurich. At the time, the Ivorian was a highly-rated prospect, attracting interest from Porto, as well as Germany. Doumbia has played just three times this season, with two of those appearances coming in the Europa League, and it now looks increasingly likely that he will be on the move again. Angers make contact for Souleyman Doumbia L'Équipe report that Ligue 1 side Angers have made contact for 23-year-old Rennes left-back Souleyman Doumbia, who wants to quit SRFC this month.
The 23-year old full-back only joined the French club back in January 2019, making the move from Swiss side Grasshoppers. Things never really worked out, and Doumbia has played just seven games for Rennes since moving to North-West France, with only one of them coming this season. The reason for this is due to Faitout Maouassa and Jeremy Morel being preferred to him. Doumbia is under contract at the French club until 2022, but they are expected to let him leave this January, whether it be on a loan deal or a permanent transfer. However, despite Cardiff City's interest, it will not be straightforward for the Bluebirds, who face competition from Dutch top-flight side FC Utrecht. French side Angers are also said to be interested in signing Doumbia, in a move that could be favourable to the 23-year old as it would allow for minimal relocation. Doumbia is actually a graduate of Paris Saint Germain's academy, spending seven years with the French giants before moving to Italian side Bari. Things did not work out for Doumbia in Bari and he was loaned to Swiss side Grasshoppers, before joining them permanently in 2017. Cardiff City are said to be interested in signing Rennes full-back Souleyman Doumbia, according to L'Equipe. The French outlet has today reported that Doumbia, 23, is growing desperately unhappy at the Brittany club, and that Cardiff are interested in bringing him to South Wales. A left-back by trade, Doumbia has played just the one Ligue 1 game all season. He's made a further two appearances in the Europa League (both coming against Lazio) and two in the Coupe de France, leaving the Ivorian frustrated at his lack of playing time. Speaking to L'Equipe, Doumbia said: "I want to leave this winter. It will be a heartbreaking situation, but I have come to an age where I must play. "I would like to do six good months on loan and then maybe come back or go elsewhere. I would prefer not to leave Rennes permanently, for the moment." The Ivorian international arrived in France mid-way through last season from Grasshoppers. A highly-sought after left-back at the time who attracted interest from Portuguese giants Porto, his time with Rennes hasn't quite gone to plan yet. As well as Cardiff, Dutch outfit FC Utrecht are thought to be interested in sealing a loan-deal for Doumbia, and so to are fellow French side Angers. The verdict Doumbia is clearly a player with a talent and at 23, he still has a lot of potential to uncover. He's had a rough time with Rennes so far and it's surprising that he's showing this much loyalty to the club by wanting only a loan-deal, but whether or not that'll suffice for Cardiff is another question.
