A Teacher, review: a queasy, non-judgmental morality play about a high school grooming

Claire Wilson (Kate Mara – The Martian) is just starting her first term at Westerbrook High, teaching English, and since she doesn't have a pandemic to worry about, she's preoccupied with starting a family with her other half, but as middle age beckons, we see her early on, stealing a lipstick from a shop, which seems quite ridiculous for a teacher to do. But about the main plot, and everyone has a teacher they fancied at school, but you'd never have a chance meeting with them in a diner, which is how Eric (Nick Robinson – Jurassic World) and Claire meet outside of school. In reality, Nick Robinson (not the BBC bod) is 25 and Kate Mara is 37, but since she looks quite young anyway, they both look around the same age, so it doesn't sound anything like the illicit premise it's meant to be. However, after tonight's episodes, you can then watch the entire series on the BBC iPlayer. Nick Robinson plays Eric in A Teacher (Credit: BBC) Who plays Eric in BBC Two drama A Teacher?

A Teacher begins on BBC Two at 10pm on Sunday 3rd January 2021. The last thing a drama about a relationship between a married high-school teacher and her 17-year-old student should be is steamy. And there was certainly little danger of the screen fogging up throughout episodes one and two of A Teacher (BBC Two). The New Year import from the FX network bloodlessly chronicled the first embers of an affair between Kate Mara's buttoned-down English teacher and a high-school student seeking refuge from a difficult life at home. Mara turned in an inscrutable lead performance as Claire, who channelled her insecurities and her dissatisfaction with her marriage into an emotional connection with student Eric (Nick Robinson who, at 25, is 12 years Mara's junior).
