The dark truth about Gary Windass was confessed to a stunned Maria Connor on tonight's Coronation Street. After police investigated a reason to believe that he's been operating as a loan shark, and fingers were pointed in the Rovers Return, the whole sorry story clicked into place for Maria. After defending her man in the pub, Maria's world was rocked when he told her that the police were right. He explained that he had been working for nasty Rick Neelan, a loan shark who terrorised him and his Weatherfield neighbours for years. "I started doing jobs for Rick to pay back what I owed him," he told Maria, who is pregnant with his baby.
His girlfriend then worked out the extent of his unscrupulous behaviour, which led to the collapse of the Underworld factory that killed Rana Habeeb. He also brought about the death of his both Derek Milligan and Robert Preston on Christmas Day after his client Derek chased Gary with a loaded rifle and left Shona Ramsey lying in a coma from a gunshot wound. The only thing Maria still doesn't know is that Gary killed Rick and buried him in the woods. "You know you didn't just cause Christmas Day, you caused the factory roof an all," she challenged. "Because you owed Rick so much money you sabotaged that roof.
But Gary insisted that he's going to change and pleaded with Maria to stick by him. "Well I'm not sure I want my baby to have a father who's been where you have," she raged. Another fan wondered if a new villain is being prepared to take his place, in the shape of new bistro boss Ray. "I get the feeling that Ray Connor will end up becoming the new central antagonist of Coronation Street, regardless of whether Gary Windass' reign of villainy will end OR not," they said. (Image: Joseph Scanlon) Events fell into place for others on the street when his ex Izzy Armstrong met Derek's ex wife Julia, who told Izzy that Derek was up to his eyes in debt to a loan shark. On New Year's Eve, rows and repercussions will continue on the ITV soap following the shocking discoveries about Gary. In May the former soldier and builder was revealed as Coronation Street's latest villain after months of speculation. He turned to the dark side after owing Rick money and encouraging Underworld boss Carla Connor to spend £60,000 on the factory roof after a botched job by his late nemesis, Pat Phelan. But Carla refused in order to save cash and because it would mean the closure of the factory for months, so Gary took the matter into his own hands and sabotaged the roof. "Gary couldn't get any work, then there was Carla sitting on the fact that the factory roof needed fixing," actor Mikey North explained earlier this year. "It wasn't going to fall down any time soon but Gary thought if he could speed up that process he'd force her hand into getting the work done sooner. "He damaged the roof a bit more, intending to hurry things along, but it still wouldn't have come down if Gina and Sally hadn't been up on it protesting. (Image: PA) Mikey, who has played Gary for 10 years, says the character isn't a villain in the guise of twisted serial killer Phelan, but warned we were going to see his darker side. "Gary's darker, edgier side has always been there, he's a Windass after all," he said. "When he first started in the show he was very hot headed and always getting into trouble but then he joined the army and I think that straightened him out a bit. (Image: ITV) "But Gary's always been unpredictable and after suffering with PTSD when he left the army that part of his personality has started to rear its head again. "We've seen it when he tackled Phelan, we've seen it through his feud with Seb and we're going to see a very different Gary over the coming months." Christmas Day saw Derek Milligan (Craig Els) rampaging through Weatherfield with an old shotgun on the hunt for Gary Windass (Mickey North) leaving himself and Robert Preston (Tristan Gemmill) dead and Shona Ramsey (Julia Goulding) in a coma. Now questions are starting to surface and Gary has a lot of explaining to do. However, in tonight's episode he left his girlfriend Maria Connor (Samia Longchambon) in a state of shock when he revealed the months of lies, leaving her questioning her place on the street. In the festive episode, Gary was seen telling Fiz to keep her mouth shut as he questioned her on the number of bullets left in the gun. Derek fell to his death after causing utter tragedy on the cobbles, but this means he isn't around anymore to answer any questions, and people need answers. In last night's episode, Gary and Maria were cornered in the Rovers Return by Ali Neeson (James Burrows) and Izzy Armstrong (Cherylee Houston).
