What happened? McBurnie had the ball on the edge of the Liverpool box when Fabinho slid in and the ball was poked away. It seemed very hard to judge whether the incident had occurred in or out of Liverpool's box, and whether Fabinho's tackle was a fair one. Dean gave a free kick but after VAR checked the decision, he awarded a penalty to Sheffield United. Why was a penalty awarded?
The Athletic has been told that VAR viewed the referee's on-field decision to award the foul to be correct. VAR also checked the position of the foul and judged the attacker's foot to be on the line, therefore inside the box. Has there been other VAR controversy this weekend? Yes. VAR was once again the talking point in Manchester United's 0-0 draw with Chelsea earlier on Saturday. Harry Maguire tussled with Cesar Azpilicueta in the 39th minute. The United captain put his left arm around Azpilicueta's neck and headed the ball clear. The Athletic understands that VAR did check that incident while play continued and did not deem it worthy of a penalty. (Photo: Stu Forster/Getty Images)
