Death in Paradise is going to be airing the first episode of season nine tonight (Thursday, January 9). This year the show will see a new detective taking the reigns from DI Jack Mooney after Ardal O'Hanlon announced he would be leaving the series last year. Here's everything you need to know about the BBC One show's return. Death in Paradise season eight finished in February, so fans have had to wait almost an entire year for the next series. However, the wait is almost over until the beginning of season nine.

There is going to be a total of eight episodes in this upcoming series. The first episode will air tonight and each episode after that will be shown every Thursday at 9pm. But when the new detective is going to be introduced still remains a mystery. Actor Ralf Little will be joining the cast of Death in Paradise. After O'Hanlon revealed he had quit Death in Paradise last year, there was a lot of speculation as to who would be his replacement. In October, fans found out The Royle Family actor Ralf Little would be taking his place as the leading man. Speaking of joining the show, Little said: "It took less than 0.005 seconds to say yes to playing the new DI! "Ardal has been wonderful in the last few series and to follow in his footsteps in a place as idyllic as Guadeloupe was a great honour and a dream come true. [BLUNDER] He will be the fourth detective to take over the position after his predecessors quit the show. Actor Ben Miller, who played DI Richard Poole, exited the island after three seasons. He was then replaced by My Family actor Kris Marshall who took on the role of DI Humphrey Goodman. Following his departure, O'Hanlon took his place but will be leaving at some point in the next series. Trending
