During Friday's (September 25) EastEnders episode, Martin and Ruby stood in Albert Square and discussed their relationship.

Ruby Allen (Louisa Lytton) and Martin Fowler (James Bye) locked lips not once but twice in EastEnders tonight (September 25). With Stacey Slater's (Lacey Turner) return having been the cause of a lot of stress, Ruby suggested that she and Martin take a break from Albert Square. When Martin hesitated somewhat, Ruby quizzed him on the matter — asking him if he's still in love with Stacey. The former fruit-and-veg stall holder promised Ruby that he wasn't, and thus the pair kissed. 'But how can they kiss with social distancing in place?' You ask.

Well, you can't, and that's why the soap's producers and directors devised a series of innovative methods in order to 'cheat' the distance. Clever plate shots and GCI wizardry made it appear as if actors Louisa and James where in the same shot, but they were seemingly filmed separately, and the end result is pretty incredible! Advertisement Similarly, their second snog came much later in the episode — in scenes which were previewed in a behind-the-scenes featurette last month — and this time, a perspex screen was used to allow the actors to 'cheat' the distancing. Pretty incredible work, but we'd expect nothing less from Executive Producer Jon Sen, who — alongside a group of the soap's core directors — devised these incredible methods. Jon told Metro.co.uk last month: 'The perspex screens that we use: you can bring people closer together and that's really good as it gives an intimacy to the performance that wouldn't be possible otherwise.

'We use plate shots which are basic CGI shots, really, where you have two people — who, in the final scene you'll see them sitting at the same table, but actually they've been filmed in isolation. The pair grew closer during lockdown and appear to be going from strength to strength despite the return of Stacey Slater, Martin's estranged wife. During Friday's (September 25) EastEnders episode, Martin and Ruby stood in Albert Square and discussed their relationship. Ruby even asked her new beau, despite him being married to her ex-best friend Stacey, to join her on a break away. As Martin expressed his feelings, the couple 'held hands' and lent in for an awkward looking kiss. However, because of social distancing regulations actors are not actually allowed to kiss one another, so their peck was shown with a railing in the way to hide their faces. Viewers of the soap rushed to Twitter to share their amusement at how the kiss was filmed. One person said: "Absolutely cutting edge use of technology to hide the socially distanced kiss on #Eastenders "Shall we just shove a pole in the way?" "Sounds good to me!". A second added: "The most tragic kiss." A third penned: "Lol Ruby and Martin split screen kiss #EastEnders." "Tragic kiss #2", added one viewer. "That perspex kiss was awful! #EastEnders", said another. EastEnders continues every Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday on BBC One. Want more EastEnders news and gossip?
