Google acquires CloudSimple to migrate VMware workloads to the cloud

CloudSimple provides a secure way to run VMware workloads in the cloud. "The CloudSimple platform transforms bare-metal resources in public cloud data centers into 'as-a-service' private clouds which can be fast-provisioned in an automated fashion. These private clouds are managed through a single portal, enabling customers to easily access all the public cloud services while benefiting from scalable monitoring, alerting, fault tolerance and 24×7 global support of their private cloud," Guru Pangal, founder and CEO of CloudSimple, wrote in a blog post. According to the companies, the acquisition is an extension of their existing partnership announced in July that made the Google Cloud VMware Solution by CloudSImple available in the cloud marketplace. Through the existing partnership, users are able to move VMwareflows from their on-premises data centers directly to Google Cloud as well as create new VMware workloads.

"Many enterprises are using VMware in their on-premises environments to run a variety of workloads: business applications such as ERP and CRM; databases such as Oracle and SQL Server; development and test environments; virtual desktops; and reporting and analytics systems. As part of their IT modernization initiatives, we hear frequently from enterprise customers that they need a simple way to migrate those workloads to the cloud. CloudSimple, which allows companies to run computing workloads that are based on VMware's server virtualisation technology, is headquartered in Santa Clara, US. "This acquisition builds on our existing partnership with CloudSimple that we announced earlier this year, allowing us to accelerate a fully integrated VMware migration solution with improved support for our customers," Vice-President (Engineering) Rich Sanzi said in a blogpost. He added that many enterprises are using VMware in their on-premises environments to run a variety of workloads: business applications such as ERP and CRM; databases such as Oracle and SQL Server; development and test environments; virtual desktops; and reporting and analytics systems.

CloudSimple co-founder and CEO Guru Pangal said the company is "incredibly excited to be part of Cloud and look forward to accelerating our ability to help customers easily move their enterprise workloads to the cloud". Google fired a shot across the bow of VMware Cloud on AWS with its Monday deal to buy CloudSimple, which enables VMware customers to move their workloads to the public cloud. "Through our existing partnership with CloudSimple, our customers can migrate their VMware workloads from on-premises datacenters directly into Google Cloud VMware Solution by CloudSimple, while also creating new VMware workloads as needed," said Rich Sanzi, vice president of engineering for Google, in a blog post. "Their apps can run exactly the same as they have been on-premises, but with all the benefits of the cloud, like performance, elasticity, and integration with key cloud services and technologies. Prior to that announcement, customers could only buy the hybrid cloud service through VMware and its partners. Alphabet's GOOGL division Google acquired a Santa Clara, CA based-startup named CloudSimple, which is a VMware VMW cloud verified partner, in a bid to strengthen cloud capabilities.

Further, the startup is an enterprise software firm that offers secured and high-performance environments to run VMware workloads in the cloud. Moreover, CloudSimple helps businesses in migrating databases, information, applications and other systems from in-house data centers to the public cloud. Notably, Google partnered with CloudSimple earlier this year to enable cloud customers to transfer their VMware workloads from on-premises data centers to Google Cloud VMware Solution. CloudSimple, which specializes in VMware virtualization software, will strengthen Google Cloud's products and services offerings. Notably, several enterprises leverage VMware to run virtual desktops, databases like Oracle and SQL and business applications – ERP and CRM, in on-premises environments.

Consequently, the latest acquisition will help Google in gaining traction among enterprise customers, which in turn will strengthen its market position. Enterprise customer base is crucial to cloud service providers as their spending to modernize IT infrastructure is increasing. Given this upbeat scenario, not only Google but also Amazon AMZN and Microsoft MSFT are making every effort to improve service offerings to reach customers, thus intensifying the cloud competition. We note that Amazon Web Services (AWS) offers VMware Cloud on AWS, which helps in running broad range of enterprise workloads. Further, Microsoft Azure enables customers to migrate their VMware-based workloads from their data centers to Azure with the help of Azure VMware Solutions. Moreover, customers will utilize VMware tools and protect their investments with VMware on Google Cloud.
