Steven Gerrard's side were beaten by a Moussa Diaby goal on the night, 148 days after their 3-1 first leg defeat at Ibrox. The winger left James Tavernier for dead and rocketed home ruthlessly from Charles Aranguiz' pass. Rangers travelled to Germany with high hopes but this rescue mission proved a step too far against the classy Bundesliga outfit. Here's how Record Sport Online rated the away side.

Allan McGregor - 6 Left with no chance at the goal as Diaby rifled high into the net. Wasn't hugely troubled despite Leverkusen's dominance. James Tavernier - 5 Couldn't match Diaby for Leverkusen's goal and was punished ruthlessly. Struggled to impose any of his usual attacking influence on proceedings with Rangers struggling to mount meaningful attacks. Connor Goldson - 7 Solid enough alongside Helander up against a menacing Leverkusen frontline. Distribution found wanting on occasion but certainly wasn't the worst offender on that front. (Image: POOL/AFP via Getty Images) Filip Helander - 7 A promising return to the side for Helander, especially considering he hasn't set foot on a pitch for the club since last December's Betfred Cup Final. Made a few crucial blocks in the first-half. Borna Barisic - 6 Like his team-mate on the opposite flank, the Croatian was unable to influence the game in forward areas. Lost Kai Havertz in the first-half and was extremely fortunate not to pay for it. Ryan Jack - 6 Worked manfully in a midfield where Rangers were simply outclassed. Could perhaps have done more to stop Aranguiz' pass for Diaby's goal. Steven Davis - 5 Toiled a bit against a slick and sharp Leverkusen engine room. Rangers may need to add another midfielder if they're going to compete at this level. Joe Aribo - 6 The Nigerian showed the odd flash of quality but, like many of his team-mates, was unable to exert much influence over the game. Will have better days. Ryan Kent - 6 Purposeful in the opening period but unable to make much head way in behind the Germans. Taken off as the tie slipped away. Brandon Barker - 5 Handed a big chance at the expense of Ianis Hagi but was a peripheral figure throughout. Subbed for the Romanian after an hour. Alfredo Morelos - 5 Took an eternity to bring the ball out of the air for what would've been a very decent Rangers chance early and it set the tone for his evening. Found himself isolated too often but hold-up play could have been so much better at times. (Image: Getty Images) Subs Ianis Hagi - 6 Offered enough from the bench to suggest he should've started. Jordan Jones - 4 A couple of decent contributions with the tie already lost. Scott Arfield - 4 A second sub appearance in a few days as he looks to break into the first-team. Nathan Patterson - 4 A brief but valuable cameo for the highly-rated youngster. Greg Stewart - 4 Wasted Rangers' best chance of the night late on.
