Kennington fire: 18 injured as smoke seen pouring from London tower block

Emergency services were called at 12.31pm on Saturday afternoon to the blaze which took hold in a ground floor flat in Kennington. The whole flat where the fire started has been severely damaged but the rest of the building has largely escaped unscathed, the London Fire Brigade (LFB) said in a statement. Videos taken by those living on the estate in Kennington show dozens of residents standing in grassland around the tower block as thick, black smoke billows from the blazing flat. A spokesperson for the London Fire Brigade said: "Eight fire engines and around 60 firefighters are tackling a flat fire on Otto Street in Kennington. Station commander Ned Alexander from the London Fire Brigade said: 'Firefighters have worked exceptionally hard to get this flat fire under control.

The London Fire Brigade (LFB) has confirmed it has deployed eight fire engines and around 60 firefighters to a fire in a flat on Otto Street in Kennington. In a statement the London Fire Brigade said: "Eight fire engines and around 60 firefighters are tackling a flat fire on Otto Street in Kennington. "The cause of the fire is not known at this stage." BBC reporter Thomas Mackintosh wrote on Twitter: "Fifteen fire engines dealing with a tower block fire in the Brandon Estate in Kennington." Twitter user Jake Wright wrote: "There is a big fire right now in a tower block in Kennington in London, loads of police, fire service and all emergency services on the scene now." Station Commander Ned Alexander who was at the scene said: "Firefighters have worked exceptionally hard to get this flat fire under control.
