ChronicleLive understands the local restrictions will include a ban on socialising with anyone outside your household and a 10pm curfew imposed on pubs, restaurants and other licensed premises. Newcastle, Northumberland, North Tyneside, South Tyneside, Gateshead, County Durham and Sunderland are all expected to be included. Newcastle City Council leader Nick Forbes said "additional, temporary" measures are being planned to prevent another full lockdown.
He said he expected Health Secretary Matt Hancock to make an announcement on Thursday morning. ChronicleLive readers took to Facebook to voice their dismay over the news. Many people felt the rules were inconsistent and confusing. Joanne Grew said: "But my kids can run around school with lots of kids while parents congregate in the yard and I can work in a shop with god knows how many people coming and going?" Stuart Archer wrote; "Can't socialise with anyone outside your household whether indoors or outdoors but it's fine to go to work and mix with multiple other households for 8-10 hours a day." Claire Petch posted: "So I can go to the pub, a restaurant take kids to school but I can't have a cuppa with my mam in her house????? Cara Ross said: "All boils down to money, you can still go out and spend your money surrounded by hundreds of strangers you've never met before to put money back into the economy but you can't spend time with your family if they are not in your household." Some pointed out the restrictions would still be harmful for businesses. Vic Harris said: "We can't cope with this in the North East. Local lockdowns are having no impact on the virus but a massive impact on people's day to day lives." Denise Applewhite posted: "Some rules are confusing & dont makes sense! Also lots of folk are not keeping to the social distancing rules "The government need to get a grip while we still have some economy left." Ann Walls wrote: "May as well close everything again then? We don't have a vaccine so all of this is pointless, destroy businesses, jobs etc because people have no common sense." But some were supportive of the move as a bid to keep vulnerable people safe. Gillian Bell said: "Well I'm sorry but if it needs to be done to keep everyone safe inc my parents who i have'nt seen since Nov, then so be it." While Nathan Richardson commented: "I for one am not surprised! The amount of people I've seen flouting the rules is beyond me! We need this lockdown to teach us all a lesson."
