M66 Bury A56

A section of the A56 has been closed near Rossendale after a woman fell from a bridge. The carriageway, near where the road meets the M66, has been taped off in both directions near Haslingden Bypass. Rossendale Police posted that a 'number of roads in the area' are closed. Drivers are being urged to avoid the area. The road was shut at around 1.20pm, according to traffic website Inrix.

Highways England also tweeted about the incident, saying traffic officers were en route. Ambulance crews are also at the scene. We'll bring you the latest in the live blog below. The bypass is closed both ways from the Woolpack roundabout to the Rising Bridge roundabout. There are queues on the approach northbound with congestion on stretches of the A682 into Rawtenstall, A681 Haslingden Road and A680 Blackburn Road.

A Highways Englang spokesman said: "Early expectation is that the road will remain closed for several hours into this peak rush-hour period this afternoon and evening." There are diversions in place both northbound and southbound. Northbound - exit the A56 at the Rising Bridge roundabout and follow the solid circle diversion symbol. Take the A680 northbound to rejoin the A56 at the Rising Bridge roundabout. Southbound - Exit the A56 at Rising Bridge roundabout and follow the hollow trinagle diversion symbol.
