Mads Mikkelsen in talks to replace Johnny Depp in Fantastic Beasts 3

Hannibal star Mads Mikkelsen is set to replace Johnny Depp as Gellert Grindelwald in Fantastic Beasts 3, it has been reported. According to Deadline, Mikkelsen is in talks to join the cast of the third instalment of the JK Rowling-scripted fantasy series, which had been derailed by the failure of Depp's libel action against the Sun. Depp said he had been "asked to resign" by Warner Bros, the producing studio, and had left the project. Mikkelsen is reportedly director David Yates's first choice for the role of Grindelwald, the "dark wizard" who was the chief antagonist of the second film in the series Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald. Three years younger than Depp at 54, Mikkelsen has made his name playing villains including Le Chiffre in 2006 James Bond movie Casino Royale, Kaecilius in Marvel movie Doctor Strange and Hannibal Lecter in TV series Hannibal. Grindelwald was played by Depp in the first and second films in the series and he had been due to reprise the role in the third Harry Potter spin-off. Following the decision, the 57-year-old star revealed that he "was asked to resign by Warner Bros" and that he had "respected that and agreed to that request". In an earlier statement, Warner Bros thanked Depp "for his work on the films to date" and confirmed that the third movie will be released worldwide in the summer of 2022. Filming is now under way in the UK, with Eddie Redmayne starring once again as Newt Scamander, Jude Law playing a young Albus Dumbledore and Harry Potter author JK Rowling co-writing the script.
