‘His Dark Materials’ Teases New Characters in Season 2 Trailer

The first trailer has arrived for season two of BBC and HBO's His Dark Materials thanks to San Diego Comic-Con 2020, which sees Lyra Silvertongue (Dafne Keen) and Will Parry (Amir Wilson) joining forces while stranded in a strange new world. After entering an inter-dimensional gateway created by Lord Asriel (James McAvoy) at the end of last season, Lyra and her daemon Pantalaimon meet up with Will, a young man from our world with a strange power of his own. The panel brought together showrunner Jack Thorne with Keen, Amir Wilson, Ruth Wilson (Mrs. Coulter), Lin-Manuel Miranda (Lee Scorsesby), Ariyon Bakare (Lord Boreal), producer Jane Tranter, and newcomer Andrew Scott as Will's father, John Parry. This season also sees the arrival of some new castmembers, who weren't present at the panel; Simone Kirby as the "dark matter" scholar Dr. Mary Malone, Jade Anouka as the witch queen Ruta Skadi, and General Zod himself, Terence Stamp as Giacomo Paradisi, the bearer of the fame "Subtle Knife." It was a standalone episode, which Jack had written with the blessing of and input from Philip Pullman, which looked at what Asriel had been doing between going through the anomaly at the end of season one, and when we see Lord Asriel at the beginning of book three," Tranter said. Tranter said filming wasn't completed before everything shut down, so Tranter said the episode has been temporarily "put to the side." That means season two of His Dark Materials will only be seven episodes instead of eight, although it still tells the full events of The Subtle Knife.

After a little bit of world-hopping in season one season two looks set to continue the trend in earnest, with Lyra (Dafne Keen) and Will (Amir Wilson) bumping into each other in the parallel world of Cittàgazze, a beautiful city with a deadly secret that becomes a key location in Philip Pullman's original novel The Subtle Knife. After appearing as a photo in season one we finally get to see Scott's John Parry in action within the new trailer, explaining the power of the all-important Subtle Knife and flying with Lee Scoresby (Lin-Manuel Miranda) as the pair try to track down Lyra and Will. A scientist from "our" world, Mary Malone is an expert in dark matter who finds herself caught up in Lyra and Will's adventures in the Subtle Knife, before becoming an even more important character in sequel The Amber Spyglass. In the trailer, we see Simone Kirby's Mary first meeting with Lyra, and also get a glimpse of the supercomputer she's using to examine Dust – though it looks like it's had a bit of a modern upgrade compared to the version described in Pullman's books… "These troubled times call for the Magisterium to take control," Will Keen's Father MacPhail says during the new footage – and with Ariyon Bakare's Lord Boreal also on the hunt for Lyra (pictured) there are all sorts of dark forces looking to get their hands on her. HBO is celebrating [email protected] with a first look at Season 2 of His Dark Materials.
