Aston Villa haven't won in the league in almost a month after a draw and three back-to-back defeats. Today's opponents are level on points with Villa with the two, at this stage, very much in a relegation scrap.

"Whichever game you go into it's a tough game," Smith explained. "We've just come through a really tough fixture list I've reeled off many times which started at Manchester City away. "Now we're playing sides around us and I said to the players, Villa Park's massive for us. "The results that we get there, the performances. Our support has been fantastic.

With the exception of Leicester City, no-one has had an easy ride at Villa Park and I can see that continuing." Villa are, of course, still without their injured trio of Jed Steer, Tyrone Mings and Keinan Davis. For Southampton, they're missing winger Moussa Djenepo and right-back Yan Valery. As for today's encounter, Smith has made two crucial changes in midfield, dropping defensive holder Marvelous Nakamba and Henri Lansbury. In come Brazilian Douglas Luiz and fresh from another goal in midweek, Conor Hourihane. The head coach has left two-goal hero against Liverpool, Jonathan Kodjia, on the substitutes bench, going with the man he's backed to the hilt, Wesley.

Here are the line-ups in full, below. Aston Villa, 4-3-3: Heaton; Guilbert, Engels, Hause, Targett; Douglas Luiz, McGinn, Hourihane; El Ghazi, Wesley, Grealish. Subs: Nyland, Konsa, Nakamba, Trezeguet, Elmohamady, Elmohamady, Kodjia. Southampton, 4-4-2: McCarthy; Cedric, Stephens, Bednarek, Bertrand; Armstrong, Ward-Prowse, Hojberg, Redmond; Long, Ings. Subs: Gunn, Boufal, Obafemi, Romeu, Adams, Vestergaard, Yoshida.
