Priced from $275,800 and $314,100 respectively, the pair cost the same as their open-top 911 Cabriolet 4 and 4S siblings, a $21,900 premium above the coupe versions. Each has a 3.0-litre twin-turbo flat six-cylinder engine. The Targa 4 offers 283kW and 450Nm, while the Targa 4S has 331kW and 530Nm on tap. When paired with the optional Sports Chrono package, the Targa 4 does the 0-100km/h dash in 4.2 seconds — a 0.1 second improvement on the the previous generation — while the 4S takes just 3.6 seconds, a four-tenths improvement.

Both are all-wheel-drive and use an eight-speed PDK dual clutch automatic transmission — Porsche won't offer a manual in Australia. The roof takes 19 seconds to open and close. The Targa distinguishes itself from the Cabriolet by featuring a movable roof section above the front seats, but also a wide roll hoop and a wraparound rear window. Its origins date back to 1965 when it was released as a 'safety cabriolet with anti-roll bar'. In Australia, it accounts for roughly half of AWD 911s sold here, and about 10 per cent of all 911 sales. Speaking from Germany, 911 and 718 model lines vice-president Frank-Steffen Walliser said the car's history played a big part in its popularity and Targa buyers were different to most 911 buyers. "It combines the new look of Porsche with a touch of the heritage — and we know 911 customers love the link to the heritage of the brand," he said. "Targa customers, let me say, they don't really look for the dollars so we see cars with a lot of options. "They're fully loaded, they look for the biggest engines — that's what we call a really good customer." Given this link to the past, Walliser said he understood the reasoning behind a cheaper, rear-wheel-drive option or a more powerful Turbo variant, but such models weren't on the horizon. "The 911 Targa customers tend to full-spec their cars and AWD would definitely be on the shopping list," he said. Camera Icon Porsche 911 Targa. Credit: Supplied "But as always, never say never." Walliser said the Targa body style could be applied to the 718 models, but drew the line at giving the title to an SUV. "At Porsche, the content and the nameplate should fit together," he said, before laughingly conceding such as philosophy isn't always put into practice. "Don't blame me for the (all-electric) Taycan Turbo, but as a general line, they should fit."
