The star of the 2019 campaign is an adorable dragon, who gets a little bit too over-excited by Christmas celebrations, until his friend – a little girl named Ava – finds the perfect gift to allow him to join in the festivities. Excitable Edgar is set to light up Christmas (Picture: John Lewis) Set way back in the past, it sees Edgar joining his friend Ava – played by 10-year-old Ruby Bailly – as their village gets ready for Christmas, except his tendency to breathe fire causes chaos with a snowman, an ice-rink and, finally, the annual dressing of the Christmas tree. A sweet festive tradition – or perhaps the zenith of a capitalist takeover of culture, depending on how Grinch-like you're feeling today – the John Lewis Christmas advert song has, over the past decade, become one of the biggest talking points of the festive season.

Gabrielle Aplin – "The Power of Love" by Frankie Goes to Hollywood (2012) After she gained a cult following with acoustic covers on YouTube, it was Gabrielle Aplin's cover of Frankie Goes To Hollywood's 1984 classic that propelled her into the mainstream, becoming the first UK No 1 single to come from the John Lewis Christmas ads. Anon – "From Me to You" by The Beatles (2008) The inaugural John Lewis Christmas cover song, this one feels like a festive performance by a group of primary school kids – joined by their trendy, Beatles-loving teacher. Aurora – "Half The World Away" by Oasis (2015) A song about aching to escape your humdrum hometown doesn't exactly lend itself to Christmas cheer, but the Norwegian singer's cover adds a suitably slow tempo theatricality to proceedings, and gives strange new intonations to the song's wistful lyrics. Elbow – "Golden Slumbers" by The Beatles (2017) Guy Garvey's gravelly baritone and Northern twang isn't quite what we've come to expect from a John Lewis advert song, but after 10 years of placid covers, his relatively gutsy rendition of the 1969 Abbey Road song is a welcome change. Eight years later, Elton John himself starred in the 2018 John Lewis Christmas advert, playing out his career in reverse to the strains of his own, 1971 version of this song.

John Lewis is counting on an excitable baby dragon called Edgar to put some heat under sales this Christmas in its first joint festive ad with its sister chain Waitrose. Marking John Lewis's first joint Christmas campaign with Waitrose, Excitable Edgar is set to a recording of REO Speedwagon's Can't Fight This Feeling by Dan Smith from the band Bastille, and was filmed over two weeks in Budapest with an extras cast of around 100 people.

It follows Edgar as his excitement about festivities in his village sees him accidentally melting the ice-rink, reducing a snowman to a puddle and setting fire to a Christmas tree as his anxious friend Ava looks on.
