Rallying Portugal Accident

Laura Salvo, 21, died at a Portuguese rally after her car hit a pine tree (Instagram) Spanish rally car co-driver Laura Salvo has died in a crash at the Rally Vidreiro Centro de Portugal. The 21-year-old was navigating for Miguel Socias when their car veered off the road and hit a pine tree. Medics arrived at the scene within two minutes and Salvo was taken to an area where an emergency helicopter could land and transport her to hospital. However, while initial attempts to resuscitate her were successful she suffered a cardiac arrest and died before she arrived at a medical facility. The Portuguese rally has now been abandoned in the wake of Salvo's death.

Advertisement Salvo's family are heavily involved in the sport with her father, Gabriel, a former driver, while her sister, Maria, is also a co-driver. Salvo won the Bierzo Rally as a co-driver for Surhayen Pernia in February and only a few weeks ago she won the Ciutat de Xixona Rally alongside Socias. Following the crash, Socias was taken to hospital but has not suffered a serious injury. The president of the Marina Grande Automobile Club said: 'On my behalf, and on behalf of the Marina Grande Automobile Club, I publicly convey my condolences to the victim's entire family, friends and team.' A Peugeot Sport statement said: 'Peugeot Sport wishes to express their sincerest condolences to the family and friends of co-driver Laura Salvo.' Royal Spanish Automobile Federation added: 'Mourning in Spanish motor racing for the death of co-driver Laura Salvo, who lost her life in Portugal while contesting a rally. Our condolences to all her family and loved ones.

The race was canceled after the incident.
