Towards the end of the first period of the Capitals' game against the Toronto Maple Leafs, center Nic Dowd had an awkward fall tangled in a group of players and stayed down for an extended period of time afterward. Dowd was helped off the ice without putting any weight on his right leg and went directly to the Capitals locker room. Nic Dowd leaves the game after trying to avoid a big hit into the boards. TJ Oshie assisted him to the exit. Dowd tried to return for the second period, but could not continue on in the game.
