Sainsbury's toy sale

SAINSBURY'S shoppers might want to hold off spending their Nectar points because the supermarket's Double Up promotion may launch at the end of this month. During the annual event, customers' Nectar points are worth twice as much when they spend them in store. 1 Sainsbury's shoppers can collect points on their card but vouchers will be issued via online or the app only Credit: Alamy According to the post, this year shoppers will be able to double up by spending in store to collect points between October 30 and November 19. This would be in keeping with past years as the promotion tends to run around this time of year to give shoppers a chance to get ahead of their Christmas shopping. Customers collect one loyalty point for every £1 spent at Sainsbury's, which is normally worth 0.5p when you redeem it in store - but this doubles to 1p during the event.

Here are some tips from Hannah Maundrell, editor of Money.co.uk, about how you can cut the cost of your shopping bills: Write yourself a list – Only buy items that you need. – follow your favourite retailers to find out about the latest deals Be disloyal – You may want to go to different stores to find the best bargains – You may want to go to different stores to find the best bargains Check the small print – It's always worth checking the price per kg/lb/litre when comparing offers so you're making a like for like decision as a bigger box won't necessarily mean you get more – It's always worth checking the price per kg/lb/litre when comparing offers so you're making a like for like decision as a bigger box won't necessarily mean you get more Use your loyalty cards – Don't be afraid to sign up to them all. And although customers can still collect the points using the cards, the vouchers - which are sent to customers once they've collected enough points - will be issued online or via the app only between October 30 and November 5. The vouchers can usually be used to purchase a variety of different ranges including electricals, toys, TU Clothing and homeware. For example, if you get a £50 voucher and you want to use it to buy a £30 perfume, you'll need to find another item that costs £20 or forfeit the remaining value of the coupon.

Nectar points collected at other retailers, such as Argos, during the promotion period are unlikely to be doubled up. While you might be tempted by the promotion, don't fall into the trap of only shopping at one supermarket for the loyalty points - you may be able to get better deals elsewhere.
