The Last of the Summer Wine and Coronation Street star's death was confirmed by her agent. Jean was best known for playing Marina in Last of the Summer Wine. Her character had a secret romance with married Howard for 25 years. Jean, who was born in Wakefield, Yorkshire, appeared in the sitcom from 1985 until it was discontinued in 2010.
She was also known for her role as Dorothy Hoyle in ITV soap Coronation Street. She played Dorothy from 2010 to 2011, but it wasn't the first time she'd been on the cobbles. She'd previously had two guest roles on the soap, starring as Helen Ashcroft, the sister-in-law of Dr Lowther, in 1987 and as Gary Mallett's mother Mrs Mallett in 1999. When she came back to the soap in 2010, she was involved in a huge kidnapping storyline that involved her on-screen husband Alan, John Stape and Chesney Brown. Jean also enjoyed success on the stage. One of her shows, She Knows You Know!, in which she played comedian Hylda Baker, was nominated for a Laurence Olivier Theatre Award for Best Entertainment in 1998, following its run at London's Vaudeville Theatre. She also starred in a touring version of Seven Deadly Sins Four Deadly Sinners. Following the sad news of her death, stars took to social media to pay tribute.
