Cleveland Police has launched an investigation into the death, which officers are treating as suspicious. The man was discovered at a house in Rydal Street, off Elwick Road, in the town centre of Hartlepool, around 8.50pm on Monday following a disturbance. Police and ambulance paramedics attended and discovered the man's body. His identity has not yet been released but police says he is 39.
Two men aged 30 and 40 have been arrested on suspicion of murder and are in police custody. Officers have been carrying out house-to-house inquiries and checking CCTV footage as part of the inquiry, to piece together the man's final movements. A force spokeswoman said: "Police were called to a report of a disturbance at Rydal Street in Hartlepool. "The death is being treated as suspicious and a number of lines of enquiry are being carried out to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident. The Burn Valley Resident's Association - which operates in the area - tweeted about the "unexplained death" with a picture of a letter posted to residents. Two men aged 30 and 40 have been arrested on suspicion of murder in connection with the incident and currently remain in custody. Residents have spoken of their shock on learning about the suspected murder. Postman Phil Ansell, who lives in Rydal Street, said: "I saw police in the street at 7am today when I left for work. I do not know what has happened." A woman, who asked not to be named, added: "It is shocking, actually." Police are appealing for anyone who may have been in the area of the incident between 7pm and 9pm who has any information to contact Cleveland Police on 101, quoting event number 097292.
