The Farewell star Awkwafina and Blue Story's Micheal Ward have been included in a list of nominees for an award for rising stars in the world of film. They form part of a five-strong shortlist for the EE Bafta Rising Star award, which was first presented to James McAvoy 15 years ago. Also nominated are Booksmart's Kaitlyn Dever, Fighting with my Family actor Jack Lowden and Kelvin Harrison Jnr, who starred in Waves. Blue Story and Top Boy actor Micheal Ward has been named as one of the five people in the running for the EE Bafta Rising Star award (PA) The shortlist was drawn up by a jury which featured radio DJ Edith Bowman and former nominee Tom Hiddleston, as well as other figures from the industry. The nominations for the award, which is the only gong voted for by the public for the annual ceremony, was announced at The Savoy hotel in central London.
Ward told the PA news agency that whilst being nominated is "a win in itself", he is keen to take home the accolade. He added: "I want to win anything that I'm up for, I feel that if you don't that's a bit weird, right?" He also praised the diversity of the shortlist, adding: "For the industry, a lot more people are coming through like me. "I feel like a lot more stories are being told and are being allowed to be told at a bigger level." He added: "To be with this group of people is quite brilliant as they are sort of geniuses in their field. "The other winners and nominees over the years are all heroes of mine and to be included in that, it's a very select group.
The winner is voted for by the public but the nominees were chosen by an industry panel. The jury was chaired by Andrew Orr, managing director of film production company Independent, and comprised actors Vanessa Kirby, Cynthia Erivo and Gemma Whelan, broadcaster Edith Bowman, critic Anna Smith, producers Uzma Hasan, Marc Samuelson and Georgina Lowe, and casting directors Nina Gold and Lucy Bevan. The 2020 Rising Star winner will be announced during the BAFTA ceremony in London on February 2, one week ahead of the Oscars. Previous winners of the 'new talent' prize include Letitia Wright, Daniel Kaluuya and Tom Holland. The full list of BAFTA nominees are revealed tomorrow.
The award, voted for by the public at Britain's top movie honours, recognises upcoming actors "who have each shown exceptional talent on the big screen over the past 12 months and captured the imagination of both the British public and experts from across the film industry". The nominations, announced a day before the complete list of competitors at the February ceremony is revealed, also include "Booksmart" actress Kaitlyn Dever, "Waves" actor Kelvin Harrison Jr. as well as "Blue Story" actor Micheal Ward. Fellow nominee Awkwafina, known for "Ocean's 8" and "Crazy Rich Asians", on Sunday picked up the prize for best actress in a comedy or musical for "The Farewell" at the Golden Globes, the first major ceremony in the 2020 awards season. Lowden, who is known for "Dunkirk" and "Mary Queen of Scots", was most recently seen in "Fighting with My Family". Past winners of the rising star award include "Black Panther" actors Letitia Wright and Daniel Kaluuya, "Spider-Man" star Tom Holland, Oscar nominee Tom Hardy and "Star Wars" actor John Boyega. The BAFTAs will be held in London on Feb. 2. Kelvin Harrison Jr. of 'Waves', Micheal Ward of 'Blue Story' and 'Fighting With my Family' star Jack Lowden were also among the nominees. Awkwafina, Kaitlyn Dever, Kelvin Harrison Jr., Micheal Ward and Jack Lowden have been nominated for the 2020 BAFTA Rising Star award, the British Academy's honor for new talent. The nominations were announced Monday in London by Tom Hiddleston, a day before the full list of BAFTA nominees are revealed. Awkwafina, a Golden Globe winner Sunday night, was nominated for The Farewell, Dever for Booksmart (although she's also been hailed and Golden Globe nominated for the recent Netflix series Unbelievable), Harrison Jr. for Waves, Ward for Blue Story (the past year has also seen him in the title role in Top Boy) and Lowden, who appeared in Dunkirk and Mary Queen of Scots, for Fighting With My Family. First introduced in 2006 (when James McCoy won) and the only BAFTA award voted on by the public, BAFTA Rising Star winners have so far included an array of now top-tier stars, including Shia LaBeouf, Kristen Stewart, Tom Hardy, John Boyega, Tom Holland and Daniel Kaluuya. Letitia Wright was named the winner in the category last year following her breakout performance in Black Panther. The 2020 Rising Star winner will be announced during the BAFTA ceremony at London's Royal Albert Hall on Feb. 2, just one week ahead of the Oscars, which moved forward to the date of Feb. 9. However, the new date is only temporary, with both shifting back to their usual spots later in the month in 2021.
