Celtic winger Mikey Johnston's fitness issues have clearly continued, as the winger has been forced to sit out of Scotland's under-21s fixture against Lithuania tonight. The youngster had been called up for the squad to face Lithuania and Czech Republic respectively. However, tonight's clash against the Lithuanians has happened without Mikey. Scotland officially named their squad this afternoon. But, unfortunately, he isn't even on the bench.
#SCO21s | Here is tonight's starting line-up for our UEFA Under-21 European Championship qualifier against Lithuania. The match kicks-off at 5.15pm and is live right here on Twitter and the Scotland National Team YouTube page: #YoungTeam pic.twitter.com/qSf2AdVgxX — Scotland National Team (@ScotlandNT) October 10, 2019 All eyes will now turn to Monday to see if Johnston is fit for the trip to the Czech Republic. It would be a big boost for Celtic if he gets some minutes before the domestic action resumes. #14 - Title chat: Have Celtic just thrown Rangers the title advantage? Celtic are, however, still represented in tonight's contest against the Lithuanians.
Ross Doohan starts in goal, whilst Ewan Henderson is on the bench. Both are on loan at Ayr United and Ross County respectively. Only three young Celts were called up to the squad. Scotland have already secured two wins out of two in their Euro under-21 qualifying group. Johnston hasn't managed to play in either of them. No Czech Republic appearance would be frustrating It's clear that Celtic and Scotland will want to be careful with Johnston. He's been out for over a month now, and all parties will want to make sure his injury isn't aggravated. But if he doesn't play on Monday night, you could question why Johnston hasn't dropped out of the squad. Therefore, this surely points to Johnston's inclusion in Monday night's team. Those players who don't head off on international duty tend to stay at Lennoxtown and continue their training programs. Celtic clearly didn't think that pulling Johnston back was necessary. With a bit of luck we see him back in the team as soon as possible. With such a plethora of games coming up over the winter months, we could do with him back to compete with Mohamed Elyounoussi. Scot Gemmill hasn't confirmed as to why Johnston hasn't been included today. However, it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure it out. Celtic resume their domestic action next Saturday against Ross County. Lazio and then Aberdeen follow that contest respectively. There's plenty of work to be done, and having Johnston back will be key to a successful run of form. The youngsters take the field at Tynecastle knowing they'll go top of Group 4 after Greece drew 1-1 with the Czech Republic in Karviná. The Under-21s then face the Czechs in Uherské Hradiště, and two wins this week would put them in the driving seat for qualification. Rangers midfielder Ross McCrorie, currently on loan at Portsmouth, captains the side, playing at right-back in a 4-3-3 formation. (Image: SNS Group) While it's not his natural position, McCrorie has played there for his country a number of times, including in last month's win over Croatia. Chelsea starlet Billy Gilmour is the man to watch in the middle of the park, with Fraser Hornby leading the line flanked by Glenn Middleton and Kyle Magennis. There were calls for Gilmour to be fast-tracked to Steve Clarke's senior squad, but it appears the Scotland boss is giving the midfielder more time to develop his game with the Under-21s.
