Sarah McBride just created history in the 2020 US Elections. She has become Delaware state's first-ever transgender senator. Variety reported that LGBTQ rights activist Sarah McBride is the first elected trans senator in Delaware. She's been working for years in the state for the issues of her community. It was in 2016 when she first addressed the Democratic National Convention.
She was the national press secretary for the human rights campaign at that time. It was also the first instance of an openly trans person speaking at a major party convention in the US. She wrote an essay on her campaign website. It showed the reasons why she was running for the senate. Here's the excerpt from the essay: "Six years ago, I drove down to Dover to stand before the Delaware State Senate to fight for my rights and the rights of thousands of other Delawareans. Together, we achieved something that many people thought was impossible – a landmark comprehensive law protecting people's dignity, regardless of their gender identity. Come January 2021, and I hope to make that same drive down to Dover and stand in that same chamber to fight for economic opportunity and dignity for every Delawarean. This is a critical, pivotal moment for our democracy. It's hard to turn on the news and not feel frustrated and heartbroken by what's going on in Washington these days. It can be hard to remember that we're all in this together because the sad state of national politics can make us feel so divided and alone." Meanwhile, the new senator is receiving admirations and praises from across the country. CEO of LGBTQ Victory Fund Annise Parker said that McBride's win is a big testament for trans leaders in politics. This grand victory gives a lot of hope to other aspiring trans persons for a brighter future. US Elections and the new wave of change This year's elections have shown the true nature of what Americans think. And they proved it through their voting decisions. The positive change can be felt already. After the Delaware state's election result, Human Rights Campaign President Alphonso David also praised Sarah McBride. He said that her victory had given a voice to the marginalized sections as a representative and advocate. He also added that any individual could achieve their dream no matter their gender identity or sexual preferences. Image courtesy of Lutsina Tatiana/Shutterstock
